Eleuthera & Harbour Island

The Land Of Freedom

After 3 days of golf carting around the pink sand beach and dining at restaurants on Harbour Island it was time to take a bigger adventure and drive to the other end of mainland Eleuthera. We pulled up to the ferry dock and climbed aboard the single engine outboard for the short run to the mainland.

Lighthouse Point, EleutheraAs we pulled away from the dock the colorful houses of Harbour Island seemed to turn in to colorful blossoms that sprouted from the island and ahead of us were the green hills of Eleuthera.  Although Harbour Island is a part of Eleuthera, the 100 mile long mainland is nothing like the busy little 'Briland' as the locals call it.  Once at the dock on the other side a tall man in a straw hat approached our ferry and proclaimed "Jeep Rental?".

'Sands', as he introduced himself, gave us a preview of the jeep and directed us on our way.  He had already rolled down the canvas top and the inside had been thoroughly cleaned for his new renters.

After about 10 minutes of driving we approached the glass window bridge which we decided to wait and stop at on the way back because our plan for the day was to drive all the way to Lighthouse Point at the other end of the island.  Charles from the restaurant last night told us that his family is from Green Castle in the south and if we wanted to see the most beautiful beach in the world that this is where we wanted to go.

The hills of Eleuthera are green and lush, lined with pineapple fields and quaint villages called settlements.  We passed through Gregory Town and Hatchet Bay on the way to Governor's Harbour where we would stop for lunch and walk around Cupid's Cay.  People on Harbour Island also told us that we could take just about any dirt road we passed and it would end up at a beach.  As tempting as this was we decided to go with Charles' conviction and head to his most beautiful beach in the Bahamas.
